The following is an excerpt from What's In a Name?:
After the 2003 name change of the Atlanta airport, I wondered, "Why has the name changed five times in less than 100 years?" What were the reasons behind all the name changes? Through the years there were many different city officials who had the opportunity to make a name change and they did. Why did they feel it was necessary to make any change? In my book, I explore the many facets of these decisions. From my perspective, I attempt to unravel the story behind the great airport.
Hartsfield was a city alderman when the airport was first named Candler Field. He was the mayor of Atlanta when it was named Atlanta Municipal Airport. After his death, I believe it was rightfully renamed for William B. Hartsfield, for he was known as the "father of aviation in Atlanta."
